Package A: Electronic Music Production with Ableton Live

EMP Students

Package A teaches you everything you need to know to produce electronic music: how to use one of the best software packages in the business along with all the fundamentals such as Beat Production, Analysis of different styles, Synthesis, Sound design, Live performance strategies and Remixing.

Not only will this course get you your black belt in Ableton Live, it will teach you loads of important techniques and concepts that can be applied to any studio or software environment.

  • Module 1: Remixing - master the basics of Live through creating your own remixes.
  • Module 2: Composing & Sound Design - deep inside creating great grooves with compelling sounds.
  • Module 3: Master Class - customized instruction for your musical goals and techniques for creating great final mixes.

Module 1: Remixing

EMP Students

This course focuses on remixing and also serves as an 8-week "boot camp" in Ableton Live. Students will learn techniques for creatively modifying existing audio loops and adding their own parts through MIDI editing, MIDI recording and Audio recording. This course takes students through every part of Live's interface with a focus on developing essential skills while always putting these skills in the context of the entire production workflow.



Module 1 also covers:

  • Navigating Live's interface
  • Working with loops and samples
  • How to warp, loop, glitch and mangle audio
  • creating arrangements and mixing them down for CD or MP3
  • Using virtual instruments effects
  • Recording and editing Audio and MIDI
  • Fundamentals of audio and MIDI clips
  • Basics of envelopes and automation
  • use of MIDI controllers for hands-on control of Live's interface

At the end of this class, students will have created their own remix of a contemporary track and will be familiar will all of the essential elements of electronic music production.



Module 2: Composing & Sound Design

EMP Students

This class will take students deep into the compositional process with an intensive looks at the building blocks of good electronic music. Programming beats, getting great bass sounds, and techniques for making your music evolving and dynamic are just some of the topics that will be covered here. Each class will be an in-depth look at some aspect of music production, teaching specific techniques for getting great results.



Module 2 also covers:

  • Creating compelling grooves
  • Classic synthesis techniques
  • Sound design using Racks
  • Warp marker wizardry for working with difficult audio material
  • Creative randomization using Follow Actions and Legato Mode
  • Developing your tracks with automation
  • Advanced MIDI techniques
  • Live performance strategies
  • Making great arrangements

At the end of this class, students will have created their own original track using the techniques discussed. At this point, students will be well versed in all of the important concepts of electronic music production, and will be ready to apply these concepts to practical situations regardless of the software or hardware they may use in the future. They will have leapt far ahead of the usual learning curve for new producers, and will be ready to focus on developing thier own personal style.



Module 3: Master Class

EMP Students

This class will be dedicated to reviewing the music students have created, giving constructive criticism and teaching additional techniques for realizing their goals. In this module we will also discuss mixing and sound design in greater depth to help students to create a polished and professional-sounding finished product.



Module 3 also covers:

  • Secrets of Compression
  • Advanced mixing techniques
  • Advanced signal routing for creative and utility purposes
  • Building your own library of tools
  • Customizing your home studio
  • Next steps for you and your music

At the end of this module, not only will students have created a musically cogent and professional-sounding track, they will understand how to use Ableton Live from blank canvas to finished product. In addition, they will have learned many essential mixing and sound design concepts that can be applied to any production environment.
